Video Tools: A Practical Guide
Trim, convert and compress video more reliably.
Video files can be large because they contain many frames and audio data. Before choosing a tool, identify the required output format, maximum file size, aspect ratio, and whether the audio must be preserved.
Pick the operation first
- Trim: remove unwanted footage from the beginning or end. Play the exported file to verify the cut points.
- Crop or resize: match a platform’s aspect ratio. Cropping may remove important material near the edges, so preview the whole frame.
- Compress: lower bitrate or dimensions to reduce size. More compression usually means lower quality; keep a master copy.
- Convert format: improve compatibility with a target device or editor. Container format and video codec are different, so changing only a filename extension will not convert a video.
- Extract audio: create an audio file from a video when you have the rights to use the soundtrack.
Why processing can fail
Large files can exceed browser memory or take a long time to process. Unsupported codecs, damaged files, variable frame rates, and limited device storage can also cause problems. Try a short sample first and keep the original unchanged.
Review before publishing
Check the full duration, sound, synchronization, orientation, frame rate, and visual quality. Make sure you have permission to use the footage and music, especially for public or commercial uploads.
